ShoveBox’s Bookmarklet

Since 1.0, ShoveBox has had a bookmarklet that lets you import pages into it by clicking a link in your browser.

This is not a very well-known feature because it’s only made apparent in the help files included with the program, which, naturally, nobody has much reason to read unless they’re having a problem. So I thought I’d shed more light on this feature here.

What’s a bookmarklet? A bookmarklet is a little piece of JavaScript that you bookmark as if it were webpage. you can use to invoke some useful functionality on the current page. The Wikipedia page on the topic explains more.

Installing the Bookmarklet

Install the bookmarklet by dragging the link below to your browser’s bookmarks bar.

Shove This Drag this link!

How to Use It

Once you’ve installed it, you’ll see a little button in your desktop browser’s toolbar like this:

And if you’ve got iTunes configured to sync bookmarks over to your iPhone or iPod Touch, you can use the very same bookmarklet from within the iPhone version of Safari if you’ve got ShoveBox Mobile installed.

Is there also a distinction between a bookmarklet for shoving as a webarchive and shoving as a bookmark? Is there a suffix you can add to the current bookmarklet that makes it so you can use two bookmarklets next to each other in this manner? Because I read somewhere that you can choose in preferences how you want bookmarks to be shoved in general. It would be nice to have 2 seperate bookmarklets for these actions, without a dialog interfering with the workflow no?

This bookmarklet works on the desktop but not on the iPod/Phone.

The bookmarklet is designed for and tested on both the Mac and iPhone.

Can you tell me specifically what you’re doing, what you’d expect to happen as a result, and what you saw instead?

For it to work on the iPhone, you do need to have the ShoveBox iPhone app installed.

    Workaround for unsynced bookmarks.
If you have the ShoveBox bookmarket installed on your Mac/PC browser, select the properties of the bookmarklet. This will reveal the java code for the bookmarklet.
    Copy this.
Paste in an email to yourself, or save it to ShoveBox.
Open the email/ShoveBox item on your iPod/Phone.
    Copy the Java code.
    Open Safari.
Create a new bookmark from any page.
    Make bookmark editable.
Change name to something suitable, like “Shove It”.
Paste over URL with Java code for bookmarklet.
    You are good to go.
Open a page that you want ShoveBox to record.
    Select your “Shove It” bookmark.
And the code will do the rest.
    Cheers.
